Mayor Bill de Blasio signed an executive order guaranteeing some city workers six weeks of paid parental leave on January 7, 2016. A parental leave policy is, in and of itself, family friendly. Most policies, where they do exist, have provisions for maternity and paternity leave and include adoption. The Mayor's plan goes a step further, including leave for foster parents. Given that 40% of our state's children in foster care are in the five boroughs of New York City and that 20,000 city employees would be eligible, the inclusion of foster families is significant.
